About

Hi. I’m the “Marla” in Marla Ink on the Side.

Marla

A Louisiana-raised Nashville-ite by way of (too) many traffic-jam-filled years in Atlanta.

I’m a former corporate marketer who now runs a “company of one” (not including the cat and the dog who, let’s face it, only occasionally contribute to the the company’s output) called Marla Ink Productions. I love being my own boss while bringing creativity and marketing communications support to clients all over the US.

I also love that I have a job that actually allows me to put my English/Writing degree to work on a regular basis. But tapping into my own creative voice, apart from the writing work I do for a living, has been more of a challenge.

When it comes to deadlines and assignments, I can get it done. When it comes to my own writing, well, I have many of the stereotypical writer’s habits and processes. A typical day goes something like this:

  1. Get coffee. Feed cat and tell her it’s going to be a great, productive day!
  2. Sit at computer. Stare at blank screen.
  3. Get some more coffee.
  4. Wrestle with dog.
  5. Back to computer. Get distracted by trending topics on Twitter. Why is that topic trending? Did that famous person die? Hey, what else is happening on the Internet?
  6. Lunch.
  7. Clean all surfaces in the kitchen and daydream about ideas for a backsplash on the wall behind the stove. Suddenly get writing inspiration – how home renovation/decor projects (for example, putting up shelves in the walk-in pantry) make my husband and me want to kill each other!
  8. Run back upstairs and quickly type out a paragraph.
  9. Stare out window. Think about what to make for dinner.
  10. Do a quick check of my favorite websites, like Serious Eats27 b/6 and Movieline.
  11. Read funny email forwarded to me by a friend who knows I’m always interested in any sort of distraction and as such, feeds said interest constantly.
  12. Type out another sentence. Reread it and decide to delete it, along with half of the paragraph I wrote earlier.
  13. Pet dog.

You get the picture.

My hope is that having this blog will help me get a little more productive with my writing. And hopefully you’ll find a little entertainment or distraction from your own responsibilities when you visit!

Thanks for stopping by!

Treding twitter topics always distract me, too.
My writing process sounds quite similar to yours. So hard to focus at times.

Ah yes, I recognize that routine, minus the dog and with the addition of Facebook. Sometimes you just have to sit down and put words on the page until they start making sense. As my friend always says: You can’t edit air!

    Good luck!

Thanks! So true, and you’re also a great inspiration to me! I just finished “I’m Taking My Eggs and Going Home.” The story hit home for me on so many levels.
